Students can now use StudentCounsellor.com to not only determine their likelihood of gaining admission to a postsecondary institution, but also to assess their careers interests and develop educational plans.

The expanded career assessment features of StudentCounsellor.com provide students with all the tools they need to identify a career path and plan their education. These new features include:

• the Career Key assessment test to identify potential career interests according to six personality types. Each type identifies potential occupations that are linked to StudentCounsellor.com's 1200 career profiles. Each career profile is dynamically cross-referenced to postsecondary programs that are relevant to pursuing that career.
• two new searchable alternatives on the Career Search section of StudentCounsellor.com allowing students to search by job title and/or by alphabet. This allows students to more easily and quickly find the careers that interest them.
• My Planner to allows students to save the results from their Career Key test and maintain a personalized career and academic plan. Students can search as many career and academic paths that interests them and journalize their results each time they use StudentCounsellor.com.

Students still benefit from the Academic Matching feature of StudentCounsellor.com to determine their likelihood of gaining admission to postsecondary programs. A positive match is generated if the student has the correct high school courses and grades to gain admission to a specific program.

StudentCounsellor.com provides students with access to information on more than 1,200 careers, 15,000 postsecondary programs and 1,300 Canadian universities, colleges and vocational schools. StudentCounsellor.com also publishes information on more than 5,000 first-year scholarships, amounting to over $30 million in funding.

September 5, 2000 marked the launch of Canada’s most comprehensive online career and academic planning tool, StudentCounsellor.com. Students and educators at subscribing schools were given instant unlimited access to over 15,000 Canadian postsecondary programs and over 1,200 career descriptions. Nearly 1,000 schools are already using the service, and are finding it to be an invaluable resource.

StudentCounsellor.com is unique in that it calculates students’ chances of admission to programs of their choice based on their academic achievements. A simple search for a postsecondary program will give a student detailed information on the program, the institution, their admission chances, related careers, and related scholarships and bursaries. All of this information can be easily stored in the student’s ‘hotlist,’ which is their own private online storage space.

Also available exclusively to educators is the Counsellor Resource Room, which is packed with useful features such as printable lesson plans, a peer bulletin board service, relevant articles, an online tutorial, and high school specific tracking reports.

StudentCounsellor.com is one of only five companies to win a national competition for funding from Industry Canada’s SchoolNet Multimedia Learnware and Public Access Application Program.

The SchoolNet Multimedia Learnware and Public Access Applications Program is an initiative of Industry Canada’s SchoolNet. Industry Canada, through CANARIE Inc. (Canada’s Advanced Internet Development Organization), and successful partners will establish joint funds to finance the production of high-quality commercial products for learning and public access on the Information Highway.
